Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) uses the natural sensitivity and responsiveness of horses to support meaningful learning experiences for people of all ages and abilities. Our programs serve individuals, groups, and organizations through both mounted and unmounted activities, using proven curricula to support essential life and learning skills.

Equine-Assisted Learning

Learning With Horses (Unmounted/no riding)

Through guided interaction with horses, unmounted Equine-Assisted Learning sessions are customized to participants’ goals and interests.

Therapeutic Riding

Mounted Equine-Assisted Learning

Our therapeutic riding sessions provide individualized, structured riding instruction while also supporting physical, cognitive, emotional, and sensory goals. Sessions are thoughtfully customized to each rider’s needs, goals, and comfort level.

We host custom workshops and training events for groups, organizations, and professionals. Sessions use horse-guided experiences to support learning, reflection, and skill development.

Meet our Lead Instructor

Sherri Rennick Brown, PhD, leads the Equine-Assisted Learning program at SFR Equestrian. She brings over 15 years of experience in disability research, education, and advocacy, along with two decades as a horse trainer and a lifelong background in equestrian sport. Sherri is certified in Equine-Assisted Learning and Horse Powered Reading® and is a professional member of PATH International. Her work is grounded in inclusive, person-centred practice and focuses on creating safe, engaging learning environments for all.

SAFETY, PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY & PRIVACY

The safety and well-being of participants, horses, and staff guide all of our Equine-Assisted Learning services. Before beginning, participants complete a brief Getting to Know You Questionnaire, followed by an in-person intake and assessment session to learn more about interests, goals, and supports. Personal information is collected only as needed and is handled in accordance with Ontario privacy legislation, including PHIPA and PIPEDA.

Getting started begins with completing our Getting to Know You Questionnaire. From there, we’ll connect with you to plan an in-person intake visit to meet our horses, tour the facility, and explore program options together.
